CONCRETE

Post by peatle »

I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO CREATE A HATCH TO REPRESENT CONCRETE IN SECTION ( WITH THE TRIANGLES AND DOTS ) AND THE FACE OF CONCRETE ... SPACED DOTS.

I'M FINDING THE HATCH CREATION PANE IN DRAWING MANAGER A LITTLE DAUNTING AND WONDER IF A HATCH WITH TWO DIFFERENT ELEMENTS CAN BE PRODUCED. I DIDN'T HAVE MUCH LUCK GETTING A LINETYPE THAT I PRODUCED TO APPEAR AND WONDER IF IT IS WORTH THE TIME EXPERIMENTING WITH THE HATCH CREATOR.

HAS ANYONE BEEN ABLE TO DO THIS OR OBTAINED THIS TYPE OF HATCH FROM ANY SOURCE THAT YOU COULD POINT ME TO ?

THANKS ~ PETER

Hi Peatle,

Yeah, the available hatches leave plenty to be desired at the moment. There are no "tileable" options, only groupings of infinite lines. I have had word from Ilexsoft that the hatch situation is one that they are going to be working on, but at the moment I haven't heard when we can expect anything. (incidentally the hatches that europeans use are much simpler... do you ever look at detail magazine? you'll see in there why HD offers what it does in the way of hatches.)

I don't do concrete hatch very often, but when absolutely necessary here is what I do: I have created a hatch pattern in a square and made a symbol of it. When necessary I import it, copy it to cover the entire area of that I want to hatch and then I explode the ones at the edges and erase the bits that I don't need. (I do this for hatches such as insulation as well.)

I'll dig up and email you the pattern if you would like... just pm me.

cheers,
ds

Tileable patterns are on our high-priority to-do list. I cannot give you much details about the implementation, but would like to assure you we do feel the need for more options for the Hatch tool.

I personally find most of the drawings on Detail magazine to be perfect with respect to ISO standards, but, um, a bit dry.

Hi Macintect,

I think you have a solution to use patterns as hatches.

I follow you till you import the patern as a symbol but after this I did not understand what you do.

"When necessary I import it, copy it to cover the entire area of that I want to hatch and then I explode the ones at the edges and erase the bits that I don't need."

Can you please elaborate how do you do this ?

Thanks a lot

Instead of importing anything into a file as macitect described (nothing wrong with that method,) I have certain patterns in my template drawing file, when needed I go to that part of the drawing file and grab what I need.

The image below shows what I’ve been doing for a long time in HighDesign, original drawing scale is 1 1/2” = 1’-0”.

1. For the concrete cut in section, I drew a pattern of triangles and circles as shown. I then copy the arrangement of geometry and bunch the pattern at the corners of the concrete similar to how it would be done if it was drawn by hand. In this case I added the pattern to the top-right and bottom-left corners of the footing, once I had one in place I mirrored the other one over.
2. For the soil cut in section, that’s three lines that are grouped together, then I rotated every other one to create the pattern. I duplicate all that around, explode the groups that need to be trimmed, then trim out the overlapping lines. In this case, the excavation is the same on both sides of the footing so once I did one side I mirrored it to the other side.
3. I used a grayscale fill for the filled cells in the concrete blocks.
4. The cross hatch through the webs of the concrete blocks is a custom hatch using the HighDesign hatch tool.

As for concrete viewed in elevation or plan, I didn’t show this, but I made a stipple pattern of small, filled circles that I use on some floor plans to designate concrete, I only put the pattern at the corners of the area, again to try to replicate the look of a manually-drafted drawing. The size of each dot is the same, but they are not arranged in a perfect grid, it looks like I took a pen and did it by hand, the spacing varies and the edge of the area is not smooth. I don’t like to fill big areas with hatch patterns, that’s not how it was done when people were drafting by hand.
